ARTICLE V – Governance of AAFSA

  1. As delegated by the AAFSA, the responsibility for the administration, management and operation of the business affairs of the AAFSA shall be vested in the executive committee. The executive committee shall consist of the elected officers and the appointed chairpersons of the standing committees. The immediate past president shall be an ex-officio member of this committee for one additional year. 
  2. The executive committee shall meet each month of the year to conduct the AAFSA’s general business.  The executive committee shall prepare the agenda for each membership meeting during the academic year. 
  3. Standing Committees – Each committee shall plan and develop programs and activities as they pertain to their areas of concern. Each committee is responsible for the conduct of the programs and should report at the regular meetings of the executive committee and at the general membership meetings. The committees will be formed contingent upon sufficient membership and participation.
    • Membership and Nomination Committee – The Chair shall be appointed by the President. The Treasurer and Secretary shall also serve on this committee to assist in recruiting new members and nominate a slate of officers for each election.
    • Faculty Affairs Committee – The chair shall be appointed by the President. The Committee will initiate and assist university efforts towards the hire, retention, tenure and promotion of faculty. The committee shall also identify, publicize and coordinate the mentoring opportunities of AAFSA members.
    • Staff Affairs Committee – The chair shall be appointed by the President. The committee shall initiate and assist university efforts in hiring, retaining and promoting staff members.
    • Black Graduation and Evening of Excellence Committee – The chair shall be appointed by the President. The committee shall develop programs and provide leadership for the enhancement of social, academic and professional opportunities for African American students. The chair shall serve as the AAFSA liaison with Black student groups and organizations.
    • Alumni Affairs Committee – The chair shall be appointed by the President. The committee shall function as the AAFSA liaison with black alumni.
  4. Social and Cultural Events Committee – The chair shall be appointed by the President. The committee shall coordinate cultural and social events of the AAFSA such as;
    • Send out birthday/anniversary/sympathy/holiday cards to African-American faculty and staff.
    • Hosts meetings and events for new African-American faculty and staff. 
    • Welcomes new African-American faculty and staff to UT Arlington campus. 
    • Develops welcome materials/packets for new African-American faculty and staff at UT Arlington.
    • Develops plans and coordinates social events for UT Arlington’s African-American students.
    • Develops, plans and coordinates social events for AAFSA members 
  5. Ad Hoc committees shall be appointed as needed by the president to serve for a special purpose for such a time as determined by the AAFSA.
