5/02 | Cite Black Women: The Politics of Citation and Call to Action

By: Center for Theory, College of Liberal Arts, Sociology, and Anthropology

Center of theory will host an event for Cite Black women on May 2nd at 4pm

Cite Black Women was created as a campaign to push people to engage in a radical praxis of citation that acknowledges and honors Black women’s transnational intellectual production. The idea was to motivate everyone, but particularly academics, to critically reflect on their everyday practices of citation and start to consciously question how they can incorporate black women into the CORE of their work.

Guest Speaker – Yasmiyn Irizarry, Assistant Professor of African and African Diaspora Studies and Faculty Research Associate in the Population Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin

05/11 | Evening of Black Excellence: Achievement and Graduation

By: African American Faculty and Staff Association (AAFSA) and the Center for African American Studies (CAAS)

Add Placeholder to: Google Calendar | Outlook | iCal File

An Evening of Black Excellence: Achievements and Graduation is a pre-commencement celebration of African and African American students, as well as students of various racial and ethnic backgrounds who minor in African American Studies or participate in programs offered by the Center for African American Studies. Most of the students to be recognized have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from UT Arlington. Others will hopefully do so in the near future, but will be honored for their merits to this point in the collegiate careers.

The Ceremony is representative of African and African American culture and heritage, embraces the value of community and scholarship, and culminates with a Kente Stole presentation. It is a celebration of excellence and accomplishment across various aspects of University life, and grants an opportunity to recognize significant people who helped our honorees reach their goals. This event is co-sponsored by the African American Faculty and Staff Association (AAFSA) and the Center for African American Studies (CAAS).

This year, the event will take place in person on Wednesday, May 11 at 6 P.M. at the Maverick Activity Center in the Lone Star auditorium. In order to participate and be recognized in this celebratory event, you can purchase your tickets online at  utatickets.com or at the UTA Box Office. Tickets will include your “UTA Black Grad” stole, a UTA Black Graduation/History shirt, and a professional portfolio. If you have a photo you would like to submit, please send it to multicultural_affair@exchange.uta.edu with the subject line, “Black Excellence.”
